Stephen Sondheim

Stephen Sondheim wrote music and lyrics for Saturday Night, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Anyone Can Whistle, Company, Follies, A Little Night Music, The Frogs, Pacific Overtures, Sweeney Todd, Merrily We Roll Along, Sunday in the Park with George, Assassins, Passion, and Road Show, and lyrics for West Side Story, Gypsy, and Do I Hear a Waltz? His collected lyrics with attendant essays have been published in two volumes: Finishing the Hat and Look, I Made a Hat. In 2010 the Broadway theatre formerly known as the Henry Miller Theatre was renamed in his honor.

Book

George Furth

George Furth graduated from Northwestern University’s School of Speech and received a master’s in fine arts from Columbia. After writing the book for the Tony Award-winning Company, he collaborated again with Stephen Sondheim, writing the book for Merrily We Roll Along. He went on to write the play or book for Twigs, The Act, The Supporting Cast, Precious Sons, and Getting Away with Murder (with Stephen Sondheim). He won the Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle, London’s Olivier, Evening Standard Award, Chicago’s Jefferson, the Andy and Drama League awards. He was a member of the Actors Studio and the Dramatists Guild.

Director

Maria Friedman

Maria Friedman is an internationally-renowned director and actor. Onstage, she has originated roles on Broadway and the West End, and has performed on television and film and in concert halls around the world. Her many accolades include nine Olivier Award nominations and four wins. Her West End directing credits include High Society and Stepping Out. Outside of London, her directorial credits include the British tour of Dusty - The Dusty Springfield Musical and A Little Night Music in Tokyo. Upcoming work includes directing A View From the Bridge in Tokyo. Much of her directorial work to date has been in collaboration with the works’ writers, including this production.

Original Play

George S. Kaufman & Moss Hart

George S. Kaufman & Moss Hart collaborated on eight plays including Once in a Lifetime, You Can’t Take It with You (Pulitzer), The Man Who Came to Dinner and George Washington Slept Here. Kaufman collaborated with others on Dinner at Eight, Stage Door, Of Thee I Sing (Pulitzer), Animal Crackers, A Night at the Opera. Hart’s other credits: As Thousands Cheer, Lady in the Dark, Light Up the Sky, Camelot (original director); screenplays for Gentleman’s Agreement and A Star Is Born (Garland version); the memoir Act One. Each won Tony Awards for Best Director: Kaufman for the original Guys and Dolls; Hart for the original My Fair Lady.

Harold Prince

Harold Prince directed the premiere productions of Cabaret, Sweeney Todd, A Little Night Music, Merrily, Phantom of the Opera, She Loves Me, Company, Follies, Candide, Pacific Overtures, Evita, Kiss of the Spider Woman, Parade, LoveMusik. He produced The Pajama Game, Damn Yankees, West Side Story, Fiddler, A Funny Thing…Forum. Prince of Broadway, a musical compendium of Mr. Prince’s career, opened on Broadway in 2017. His opera productions have been seen at the Lyric Opera of Chicago, the Metropolitan Opera, San Francisco Opera, Houston Grand Opera, Dallas Opera, and Vienna Staatsoper. He received 21 Tony Awards and was a 1994 Kennedy Center Honoree.

Director/choreographer and former Co-Artistic Director of Queen’s Theatre, Hornchurch. Orchestrations

Jonathan Tunick

Jonathan Tunick was Stephen Sondheim’s orchestrator of choice, orchestrating nearly all of his musicals. He is currently orchestrating Sondheim’s posthumous musical Here We Are. In 1997, he received the first Tony for orchestrations, elevating him to “EGOT” (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony) status. In 2009 he was inducted into Broadway’s Theatre Hall of Fame.
